When I started blogging, I didn’t really know what I was doing. But over the years, I’ve learned a few things here and there around the internet. But I don’t want you to have to spend hours searching the internet for things I could share with you here. So that’s the plan, I’m going to show you how to start a blog, the easy and simple way. You don’t need to hire people or pay for someone to set your blog up for you. You can totally handle this! If you have any questions after going through all of my blogging resources, I’ll be happy to answer them the best I can!
Where is your blog going to be?
WordPress.org? WordPress.com? Blogger? There’s a great deal of options out there these days and it can all be a bit confusing. When I started my blogging journey years and years ago, I used Blogger. It was simple and easy. But I had no idea of how amazing my blog could be with a properly designed theme, plugins, and content. So I made the choice to start from scratch on WordPress.org. There is a small cost to using the self-hosted site, but it is completely worth it. The amount of customization, ad choices, plugins, and so much more is amazing. And, it’s actually the easiest platform I’ve ever used. After you’ve made this decision, you’ll need to choose your domain name and hosting package.
Select and register your domain name
I’ll be honest here, I think I’ve changed my domain name at least 5 times since I began blogging. I don’t want you to go through what I went through. Jot down a bunch of ideas that you have that you feel represent you and what you want to blog about. Or not. Sweet Hydrangeas has nothing to do with food. But I LOVE my blog name now. Go with a name that makes you truly happy and proud to talk about it. Do some research and see if there are any other blogs or websites that are too similar in name. There are a few places around the web that you can register your domain name, but during the beginning of your blogging journey, I suggest going with the free domain name option offered by Bluehost.
Which hosting provider will you use?
Sweet Hydrangeas is hosted on Bluehost. I find them to be the easiest to use, amazing value, great speed, high security, and more. You can search the web for other hosting providers, but I would always recommend Bluehost. Now I’m going to show you how to set up your blog with Bluehost and install WordPress. It’s a lot of steps, but they’re all super easy.
Set up your hosting at Bluehost
Clicking here will bring you to the Bluehost website where you can begin setting up your blog. You’ll now exactly where to start because of the giant green button that says “get started now”.
Now it’s time to pick your plan. I suggest starting with the basic plan. You can always upgrade later.
Here’s where you can register your free domain with Bluehost or provide the domain name you’ve already registered.
Enter all of your account information and contact information.
This section is super basic. You don’t need to purchase anything extra right now. You can choose to add these later. In order to get the best hosting price possible, I suggest going with the 36 month plan. That’s 3 full years of hosting for only $142.20. And then you don’t have to worry about keep up your payments or billing information.
After you hit submit, just skip past the additional extras and hit complete. As mentioned, you can always add these later.
YAY! You’ve set up your Bluehost account! Now the fun stuff begins!
Now it’s time to choose your password! Make sure it’s strong and that you don’t forget it!
Once you’ve created you password, that you won’t forget, it’s time to log in to your hosting account!

Want to jazz up your blog? Time to pick your theme!
I literally love every single theme that Lauren from Restored 316 has created. To date, I’ve bought 2 of her themes. And, I’m about to buy another one. This is also something that I strongly suggest, find a theme that best suits your content. In my blogging journey I’ve had been able to grow in my personal life and find what I really love to write about. So before diving in and purchasing a theme, even though their so so so pretty and you’re gonna want to buy them all, decide which theme works best for you. I’ve written a post that helps you decide what them is right for you.
