I personally love making my own seasonings. It’s a great way to save money, make bigger batches, and know exactly what’s it. I used to buy store bought pouches every single time I needed one. This became tedious and I really didn’t like the additional preservatives. It took me a while to find recipes that I was able to alter to create the perfect level of flavor for each seasoning. So today I wanted to share with you my five favorite homemade seasonings that are staples in my pantry. My favorite way to store this lovely creations is in mason jars! I’ve linked a few at the bottom of the post for you.
DIY Ranch Seasoning
One of my favorites ways to use this ranch seasoning is with chicken breast or turkey burgers! It gives the meat an extra flavor that I love without all the added calories from actual ranch dressing. And I could literally drink ranch dressing if it were socially acceptable, which it’s not, so there goes that dream. To make this seasoning more authentic, you could add buttermilk powder. I made the decision not to add it because I’m doing my best to omit dairy from my diet.
DIY Taco Seasoning
Tacos and fajitas are a regular in my home. Briam and I love being able to sit at the dinner table with all our ingredients in front of us. We craft our tacos, talk about our day, and laugh at each other for over stuffing the tortillas. I hated buying pouches of taco seasoning every single time I made tacos, so I made my own darn seasoning. You can totally omit the cayenne if you’re not a fan of spicy food or you can add more if you like the heat!
DIY Chili Seasoning
While it’s terribly hot most of the year down here in south Florida, we do get a few weeks of what we call “winter” and the rest of the world calls a nice day. One these few cold days, I like to cook up a batch of chili to keep us warm! I normally use my slow cooker, which is literally the best invention ever. For me, this is just a base seasoning. Depending on the type of chili I’m making, I may add a few more spices here and there. And obviously salt. Always add salt.
DIY Italian Seasoning
This seasoning is by far the most used one of all my homemade seasonings! I make a good amount of pasta so this is always involved. We literally love pasta, so freaking much. I prefer to make my own sauce as well, so a tablespoon of this is a game changer. Easily used for turkey or chicken breast and even pork chops if you’re feeling fancy, this is a great start to any Italian dish!
DIY Cajun Seasoning
While this is probably the least used seasoning in my house, it is still a favorite of mine. I like to make cajun shrimp or chicken with veggies and rice from time to time. It’s always a quick and easy meal, so having this seasoning on hand helps with that. I love the cajun flavor, but I’m a little wimpy when it comes to the heat. You could totally leave the cayenne out, but even just a pinch makes it a bit more authentic.
