I’m going to be upfront with you here. By no means am I an expert in skin care or am a dermatologist or a hormonal expert. I’m just a 27 year old woman who’s gone off birth control and now have skin problems like I’ve never had before. So today, I wanted to share with you my thoughts on my current skin issues and how they make me feel. I also want to talk a little bit about birth control versus potential hidden allergies as well as sharing my current skin care routine with you!
My Current Skin Issues
First things first, I currently have large, painful, cyst like bumps around my jawline and on my cheeks. I’ve never had any pimple like these before. They’re literally so freaking painful that my entire jaw hurts if I touch one. I feel so upset and yet some how very uncaring about how my skin looks. I’m upset because I don’t like the pain and I don’t like how my skin looks. I don’t want to wear makeup mainly because I don’t want to add a layer of pore clogging grime to my skin in its current state. But yet, I also don’t really care how my skin looks. I knew that the decision to stop taking birth control would have potential side effects, and this could very well be one of them. I know that eventually my skin will clear up and all will be right in my world again.
Stoping Hormonal Birth Control
The decision to stop taking birth control was made based on a few different factors. I want to make it very clear right now though, by no means are we trying to conceive a baby. I like kids. Maybe we’ll have a few later in life, but definitely not right now. With that being said, some of the main reasons why I stopped taking birth control are: I no longer have health insurance, I don’t like how I feel mentally when I’m on birth control, and I’ve been taking the pill for about 13 years now and would like a break from adding chemically altered hormones to my body. Now I don’t know if my skin issues are being affected by the hormonal changes happening in my body. Maybe my hormones are trying to sort themselves out and everything is going haywire. I don’t know, but I like to cover all my bases.
Potential Hidden Allergies
In doing my research about cystic acne along the jawline and on the cheek area, I found that allergies could be the culprit. According to numerous articles, having a diary allergy or intolerance can cause acne along the jawline. I found this interesting because I don’t consume a lot of dairy, mainly just cheese. I drink almond milk and prefer fruit smoothies to ice cream. But recently I’ve been eating a good amount of cheese in almost all of my meals. This is something I’m going to look into further and see if removing dairy from my diet improves my skin at all.
My Current Skin Care Routine
I have a pretty basic skin care routine that I’ve employed lately both for the morning and the night. They’re essentially the same, just a few changes in certain products.
What skin care products do you use? What kind of skin issues to you have?
